Time-refraction optics with single cycle modulation

Abstract We present an experimental study of optical time-refraction caused by time-interfaces as short a single cycle. Specifically, we the propagation probe pulse through sample undergoing large refractive index change induced intense modulator pulse. In these systems, increasing abruptly leads to where spectrum all waves propagating in medium is red-shifted, and subsequently blue-shifted when relaxes back its original value. observe phenomena single-cycle regime. Moreover, shortening temporal width ∼5–6 fs, that rise time red-shift associated with proportionally shorter. The experiments are carried out transparent conducting oxides acting epsilon-near-zero materials. These observations raise multiple questions on fundamental physics occurring within such ultrashort frames, open way for experimenting photonic time-crystals, generated periodic ultrafast changes index, near future.
